Woodson, J. (2014) Brown girl dreaming. Nancy Paulsen Books: New York.
2015 Coretta Scott King Author Book Winner
This book is written in free verse and gives an account of her life growing up with her family in Columbus, Ohio and in South Carolina. I was really drawn into the fact that she had such a difficult time with reading but was able to write and become an author. I really loved in the book how she says words are her brilliance which even though she struggled with reading, writing was her passion.
A book that came to mind when reading this one was Thank you Mr. Falkner, written by Patrica Palacco. She also struggled with reading and became a writer.
